And as far as your neighbor is concerned, if you did nothing to report it then you are an accessory to fraud, and part of the problem.
Listen, we are both conservatives, it seems, but what you ask calls for a massive expansion of manpower. Think on that for a minute. Why don't we just end payments to grandma altogether, kill medicare completely and stop all the fraud and abuse?

Social Security is not Medicare. Please don't use one federal agency to justify your straw man argument against another federal agency. Much of the Social Security agency is retirement age, and the positions are not being refilled as there has been a hiring freeze since the President was elected. With people complaining that disability cases take too long to decide, people complaining about waiting times in the lobby, and people complaining about waste, fraud and abuse of funds....where do you believe Social Security should place the highest priorities? Making sure your spouse dying of cancer is handled in a timely manner? Or preventing someone from getting a check who shouldn't. Because without more people you aren't going to get the same devotion to both.
There are 52 million people on one form of OASDI or another, this includes the disabled, the retired and the survivors. Are you willing to pay the MASSIVE EXTRA TAXES it would take to fund the massive undertaking it would take to continuously update these records? The Social Security administration has manditory reporting procedures for funeral homes and state and federal agencies. If this covered 99.9% of every possible contingency that would still leave 52000 discrepancies. I think you have no idea of the scale of the program.
It was Social Security fraud, not SSI (Supplemental Security) fraud.
Social Security is not welfare, its an earned benefit for people who have worked and paid FICA taxes.
