Harriet, I will take you on a tour anytime! I will be back in DF in July/August, and again in October, so you just let me know when. Saludos!
Lovely! This makes me think of similar things that happen in Mexico City all the time. When I take tourists to food stands, the owners are always surprised that foreigners are interested. You summed it up perfectly -- they're imprinting happiness on people's lives.
Ditto on Sr. Augustín. What a face!
Lovely photos! And I adore Medellín. I've been to the Yucatecan place you tried -- I haven't tried their panuchos, but the chamorro pibil I had there once was awesome. Glad you got to hang out with Ruth, too. She's the best.
I loved this post. I feel the same way you do -- whenever I'm traveling, all the foods I get so hyped up about are never quite good enough. It's the stuff I don't plan for, the surprises, that end up blowing me away. (Like vegan soul food in Harlem!) I don't even know where home is anymore -- I thought it was Mexico, but after being in the States for three weeks, home was starting to feel like there, too. That said, I really, *really* enjoy a bite of a fresh corn tortilla. That will always remind me of Mexico. Of my U.S. home: a bite of my mom's Mexican rice.
Also: absolutely lovely photos!
