We live in the Chicago 'burbs, and as far as I'm concerned, if you're inviting people over for a nice evening, it's your job to make sure your driveway and sidewalks are clean and dry. Bust out that shovel/snow blower/bag of salt and get the job done. If I'm a guest at a Christmas party, and I have to maneuver ice or skip through the snow in my nice shoes, you can be sure I'm NOT taking them off when I get inside.
We generally don't wear shoes at our house - 'cause we bought a house with white carpet in the front half of it. There is a rug at each door, though, and a cute basket for shoes. If people notice, and they take their shoes off, great. If they don't, I don't say anything.
