How naive we were (or selectively ignorant). We were more willing to question the bats or the baseballs than to implicate our heroes, thus spoiling our fun and amazement.

As a longtime Blazer fan, I'm beginning to feel the "wait 'til next year" mentality creep in. So much promise in 2007, and now...

It's amazing what this team has accomplished with all the setbacks, but nothing short of a ring will satisfy. Last (and only one) was in 1977.

Thanks for writing this, Dean. Right now, I can't seem to muster the passion...

Sometimes it's a fine line knowing when to get off the merry-go-round. Of course we all want our final ride to be a point of emphasis - something for others to shoot for. Risking the chance we might come up a little short...and do (ala Zenyatta), is a demonstration of courage, imo. The same courage we so admired many times during the athlete's career.

When we see an athlete who can't come to grips with the finality of retirement (ala B. Favre), it somehow dilutes the greater body of achievement.

Hope Fed can properly discern that time when it comes.

Fantastic piece of writing, JA!

Watch the official signal the made attempt. The drama of the moment overtook his neutrality. I love sport!

Yeah...fresh-cut grass, muscle rub and stick'em. Popcorn and hot dogs.
I can smell it already.

Thanks, Dean.

Your comment reminded me of the great racehorse Man O' War who, because of his dominance, was routinely handicapped with 30 lbs. of weight. It doesn't seem right, but I suppose the thinking was, "better a good race than one more foregone conclusion." In my mind, it's just as wrong to limit performance as it is to "enhance" it. Let the athlete's dominance cause the world to marvel. In Semenya's case, she apparently (by nature) had crossed the mysterious chemical line separating male from female, which is a different issue. What will cause me to marvel is if Semenya can dominate in spite of her limitations...like Man O' War did. (Random thought: in horse racing, the fillies can run nose-to-nose with the studs.) Thanks for your thought-provoking comments, JA.
