This is just testament to social becoming an evolving marketing platform. With Facebook being the most popular, the Like button is here to stay for a while. This is mainly because so many people use the Facebook platform, and Facebook has all the data in the world. It's only a matter of time before Facebook builds out their own ad network.

But for now, advertisers should be jumping on this Like button, as it is a good way to virally spread content and build brands on the social area.
