Because of the time required to get the repeal amendment ratified, a transitional plan would probably be needed. I believe in laws based on reason that protect the individual from harm, coercion, and violence while leaving the person to interact freely with others in any manner that is mutually acceptable. I also believe in enforcable contracts that could be made iron-clad by simple language and prior court approval and that is where I believe the future of civil union law should go. France (btw, I don't like the french, and yes I've lived there) are way ahead of us on that one.

Nothing about government preferences or set-asides has anything to do with morality. Morals are not the business of government except as to the interaction of individuals on a basis of physical or financial harm. Religion is the arbiter of morality on a personal level and very useful for a civil society. I don't see how the government usurpation of a religious right is either moral or ethical.

Let's just gt the government out of marriage altogether. Marriage should be a religious rite with no government involvement whatsoever, no preferences, allowances, tax or other inducements or penalties. Non-contestable civil union pre-nup contracts replacing all common law family courts.
