Good point Utpal - when it comes to managing expectations (the core of services industry), it always helps to over-communicate.

I have been thinking about this holy grail of "performance appraisal". For once, reviewing performance only once in a year does not make sense. It has to be a continuous process of feedback round the year.

Secondly, a lot of managers point out "areas of improvement" in performance appraisal just because they have to - and just because it is necessary to rationalize expectations of the team member. There is a difference between pointing out gaps to help other individual improve (which has more meaning), and pointing out gaps to rationalize expectations (which is a necessary evil)

:)

You hit this one straight out of the park Utpal - great post. Happiness is an eternal thing that is within us - yet, we search happiness out there.

Thanks for this all important reminder.

Excellent story - In our world, it is not a safe strategy to keep "doing as directed". Initiatives, drive and proactive thinking helps us make our performances special. At the end of the day, people (our clients, PM, business owners and everyone else) only care for things that are special.

Important lesson there for professionals!
