This has always been my favorite falsehood. What about [deep breath] The Crusades, The Inquisition, the brutality of the Conquistadors, every war of choice waged by a "divine right" king or Pope in Europe, Salem witch trials, and 9-11. (could i not go on by naming every act of brutality by the king/dictator of every nation for which there was an established religion?) All those actions were committed by fervent theists. I guess that means theism is bankrupt. And for the record, Hitler's regime did have Christianity-- all his soldiers had "God is with us" [gott mit uns] on their belt buckles, for chrissakes.

As for atheism being called out as "aggressive" atheism, this is a new epithet for me, and I can already see it now in campaign ads (as if "atheist" itself did not have sufficient negative connotations). someday it may join "limousine liberals" and "kneejerk liberals" in the pantheon of strategic conservative namecalling.
