I would assume it merely reflects the changing face of Canada, which I am strongly in favour of. We have the benefit of a rich, diverse culture due to decades of immigration. (Centuries, really, as we are all descendants of immigrants, save for First Nations Peoples)

To what end? I fail to see what good can come of knowing a specific number. This number would only be used against us, as in "See! there's only this many, they're insignificant." Or, to fuel the "world's going to hell in a handbasket" mentality.
As for a list of beliefs and practices...

We will never be taken seriously while hiding in a closet. Unfortunately, the risk is high for some, as was effectively pointed out in this article. Damned if we do, and damned if we don't.
