it can be difficult for me, since I often approach from the development end first. I focus on what functionality is needed before I even think about how it will look. In addition, I'm not a graphics person by trade, no formal education, etc and taught myself by designing in the browser. So what I've begun doing (with the projects I don't bring in a different graphics person for) is get the client involved BEFORE the mockups start. Get color scheme ideas, sites they like, etc. Then I put together a few wireframes (without a touch of "design") and get that part nailed down. Once that happens, the rest pretty much takes care of itself....most of the time :)
Sorry, but I have to disagree here. Your entire premise is based on the idea that MTV would want someone with an established online brand and premise. Tell me, how many VJ's were known outside of the MTV world before they got their gigs? None that I can remember. Also, in reference to the working from NY. It's essentially a marketing job. Most MTV folks are involved with meetings, cross-promotional activities, and other stuff outside of just 'tweeting'.
And being nobodies? That's kind of the point. They are going to be a mouthpiece for MTV, not themselves. If they wanted someone like Gary Vee on-board, they'd just sponsor him. The person who gets selected for this gig will be the twitter voice with the MTV message, not mine or Mia's or anyone else's.
What I find funny about all this with all the privacy discussions going on, no one is paying attention to the fact that without constant filtering and vigilance, the average FB feed is on par with the scribblings on a bathroom wall. THAT's what I deleted my profile a few weeks ago. It had become a gutter and full of noise. The privacy issues were just icing on the cake.
I keep it as simple as possible. There is a god. I'm not it. Anything else is someone else's idea.
