Open is a necessary descriptor from a marketing sense. But, absolutely, people should be forced to describe what they mean by open -- there are so many flavors of open that it means something different to everyone...although that's what makes it such a good word and not a buzzword: because open really is good no matter what it looks like.

So true. The tech equivalent to the Big Mac Index is the Kid Excitement Index. Mine loved the Gluecon yo-yos and Rubik's cube...something marketers should keep in mind when they plan their conference schwag.
