These are really cool--and reminiscent of post-WWII design styles and colors. And indeed, especially the "improved scenery" message--I'm preparing a number of large interpretive signs plus some small functional ones for a conservation area and NO ONE pays attention to the "clean up after your dog" signs. A good laugh might make the difference!

What a wonderful story--thank you for finding it! I'd been wondering about the place since I'd seen the videos and also a few articles on social networking sites.

Vanity fur is simply cruel. In primitive cultures where fur is necessary and every part of every animal is thankfully, often reverentially, used, the practice makes at least a little sense, but we modern humans don't need to wear animal skins if what Carole saw there is the result of it.

Wonderful article, Daniela--not every dog is like Lassie! I do hope they find the woman who is lost, though if her dog left her I doubt there's much hope.

People used to keep crows as pets all the time--for rural kids, they were as common as dogs and cats as pets. It sounds really cool, but they would usually steal a young one from a nest and finish raising it so that it would imprint on the person and their home. They were never kept indoors then as most people didn't keep their pets indoors.

In a related idea, I know two couples who tried for years to have their own baby, but only conceived after they adopted pets, one with dogs, and one with cats. That nurturing instinct awakens with our precious animal companions!

I don't leave food out, so it's not a problem, but I also have a water bowl in almost every room. It's really helped everyone with water consumption, especially the older ones, and helps keep the water clean because I have a few who like to play in it...

That's why I love these events! The effort always seems insurmountable, but once we're all there together I never want it to end--except that I want to get back home to my kitties! I'm glad you had a successful day.

Hugging nine cats is hard enough, but I can do two or three at a time! Your three dogs are beautiful, though--I'd be constantly captivated by just looking at them.

Just two more lines:

"a welcome lap where I can rest,
and gaze at the person I love best"
