The only expectations about how I should or should not be playing that matter to me are my own expectations and my guild's expectations.
MY expectation is that this is a game that I can, and will, play in whatever way is the most enjoyable for me. This means I won't necessarily get valor-capped each week, nor will I particularly care if I don't.
As long as I am living up to my own guild's expectations for preparedness, I have NO obligation whatsoever to meet the more demanding standards that people who are raiding in more competitive, "bleeding edge" type environments might expect of themselves and their fellows.

Not a response to your topic itself, but a question about one of the terms you used in it --

I'm pretty new to the WoW blogosphere, and I keep seeing this term "imba" floating around, but I haven't yet sussed out what it means. Is it just a short way of saying "imbalanced" as in "imbalanced spec and imbalanced gear showing that this person hasn't got a clue what their class is really all about"? Or does "imba" mean something else?

I've thought on occasion about faction changing one of my characters -- temporarily, to get something only available to members of the other faction, then changing back. The story/personality that would go along with the whole uncomfortable I-am-not-myself-ness of it is that my character was CURSED! by an evil witch! to be a member of this other faction race.:P
