We dug them up all the time as kids, you just need something to place dirt in (we used our red wagon) a spade and an antlion pit. Dig out the pit from the side and make sure you go well beneath where you think the critter might be, dump your spade of dirt into your wagon and slowly sift it out. One of the weirdest things about them that I remember was that they run backwards away from predators (so they can see what's coming for them?) and will build new pits quite quickly given enough loose dirt. We spent many a summer afternoon feeding hapless ants to the antlions we had captured.
