I like this Stuart. I think the plan of having this as a lead then asking for more specific info next week is a good one. I know you are trying to cover all the bases here, but I wonder if promoting one specific workshop (perhaps aimed at second years?) would maybe attract more attention than the general 'academic workshop' catch all?

My friend says: 'I use Mailchimp - more than happy with it, it's really easy to use. The templates are a bit basic and not very flexible, but you can still produce some professional looking results. Dead cheap too. I have just under 2000 email addresses. Works with Twitter, Facebook and Google Analytics too. HTH' Good point about PTA, school uses parentmail, so we push our stuff out through there, but it may be worth considering something with a little more interactivity!

Asking a marketing manager I know for you but it is a crying shame that CFS can't handle this :-(

LOL - this is great news Stuart. I suspect your feelings about the iTunes voucher are correct, that isn't menitoned in the email and therefore wouldn't be an incentive until after they'd clicked on the link. I think timing is key here, freshers in particular will not have had many university emails yet, so the novelty is important.

Great stuff Stu.
A little user testing would go a long way - not a great time of year to do it I know, but if you can ask just 5 students to take a look at it (at the end of a consultation perhaps?) I'm sure the information they give you would be invaluable. See Jakob Neilsen for user testing stuff. Can you run crazy egg or any other analytics on plone pages? If so, this would give you some more data about where people are clicking (as Alan for specifics, I don't know how to set it up but I know he has used heat maps/ analytics to redesign his blogs).
