That's an awful experience. I'm sorry you and your children had to endure it.

He frames immigration and affirmative action as "issues that affect white people" (thereby making those issues all about white people rather than means to address very real racial injustices) and wonders why people might find his group racist?

I'm guessing that honest self-reflection is not one of his strong points.

Agreed. And it seems to me that people like Kurtz thinks that he's entitled to hear the version of Collins story that he wants to hear.

Let's suppose for a moment that Collins actually did choose not to mention his engagement. There are doubtlessly dozens of reasons he might make that choice, though most of them boil down to "he doesn't feel it's an important enough part of his story to tell." But here we have Kurtz arguing that no, Howard Kurtz is the person who gets to decide what aspects of Jason Collins's story really matter. What arrogance!

This was a powerful reminder of just how deep the problem of bullying runs. Thank you for sharing. And I pray we find a way to change the system(s) that continue to enable the bullies.

If we are to have a face in power that looks like us, what we need is not another puppet, but one committed to liberation and true social change. I don't see anything to be disappointed about with Tuckson being passed over, anymore than I do with Francis being selected. If the institution itself remains unchanged it matters not who runs it.

Well said! Sadly, I don't see the institution changing in the near future. The institution is ran by men who I suspect will continue to make sure that like-minded men hold the reins for some time.
