I've been using a cheap prepaid unlocked nokia as I wander the world for a year. I've found that even my $30 nokia has a web browser that's good enough for simple news checking, foursquare and twitter. Also, the MIDP GMail app is fantastic for checking your email.

My guess: Vancouver's a really really small town.
