That is a very interesting question! I think I will cover some of that in an upcoming article :) For a short answer, it really all depends on what your personal definition of superhero is. Do his actions and intentions make up for him purposely seeking out powers? Is he less worthy of them than others because of the means that he took? Does this lessen his good deeds in your eyes?

This is a little depressing.

I agree that it is hard to fully understand the movie version of a book without reading it first. However, I don't think that Griffey needs to read the books to be able to review the movie. There are literally thousands and thousands of people reviewing movies who have never read the book it was based on. Sometimes it is interesting to read the viewpoint of a person who has no idea what the movie SHOULD be about.
