@Michael Papanek: The process you describe is the classic Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle that is decades old and still underutilized. Those simple principles can yield so much.

Keep in mind who you hope to work for, however, as not everyone has embraced the medium..... plenty of traditional companies out there are blocking social media sites and terminating employees for what they portray on blogs, facebook, etc. Whether or not they should.....well, I'll leave to another debate.
Personal and "professional" profiles are remarkably intertwined. How you connect with friends on facebook and how you portray yourself there may very well override the opinion people have of you, no matter how well constructed your profile.
This is not to draw a line between "right" or "wrong" behaviors - I'll leave that for others to decide, too. (It's far too subjective anyway). What it does mean is that a component of your personal social media strategy should include more than just how you wish to connect with the world, it should also include a strategic decision on how you wish for others to perceive you.
