this is tough due to the fact that Facebook can, if properly utilized, be a great platform for connection and information. this isn't the most creative solution, and it should be part of a quiver of attempts to address the situation. the idea that Facebook is the playground for what is already in the heart of people is solid, but there are a whole host of paths that flow out from that. are we banning email? do the pastors have church-issued cell phones and if so what about text messaging? it is difficult to know where to draw the line, but I appreciate the idea that this pastor knows his context and I do not.

Yes, Wendy is a "sweaty heathen" and let's not forget the McDonald fellow with his shifty eyes...

jon, I never comment on blogs normally but I actually laughed loud enough to alert others in our office that something was afoot. the whole thing about the rain stick solo was classic, but I especially resonate with the give-your-money visits b/c my wife and I (no joke) visited three churches within 7 miles of each other on three separate weekends one summer and they were all in "stewardship" campaigns. dead on though, you have to go back again. now, if you go back after the money sermon and they have rain stick lady, well...can't help you there...

reading Michael Wilkins "Following the Master" is a great nuance to this discussion. I would say that if we believe that everyone is being "spiritually formed" whether they've been converted or not (a la Willard?), then why couldn't discipleship be what Alan & Deb are describing? This is part of the other great discussion: what (if there is one) is the difference between discipleship and spiritual formation?

"Untamed" was great reading - thanks Alan & Deb.
