I hate them too, but just like direct mail, auto dm's can drive conversions. I much prefer an auto @mention, but I haven't been able to convince IFTTT it's a real thing yet. but yeah, don't do it. rather than telling users stuff they shouldn't do, I'll give you one they should: keep your tweets down to 120 characters to make it easier for 500 million ppl to retweet you. because they're watching every thing you say.

I'm with Steve #1 on this one, although I can understand Steve #2's concern about loose local cannons. we've all experienced a store employee with a bad attitude. On the other hand, many/most/nearly all store employees are super nice and exceptionally helpful. why not let store employees volunteer to take on social responsibilities for their location? provide some basic social etiquette training. use a posting platform that gates posts until they can be reviewed quickly by the erics and ericas. timely interaction. store-level knowledge.

think about how much direct marketers spend on indiscriminate couponing - because it work, if done correctly. compared to that, the incremental expense of creating and integrating QR is zip, and can help the marketer identify promising core customers

it is true that since november 2009, linkedin has shifted to (depending on who you read) nofollow or less-than-optinmal links from profile pages. at the very least, however, customizing the links in your profile will increase referral traffic by improviong conversion. thanks for the comment!

thanks Andy! I saw the linkedin feature and wrote a quick post about it <a href="http:// (http://btrandolph.com/2010/11/improved-rapportive-links-linkedin/)" target="_blank"> <a href="http://(http://btrandolph.com/2010/11/improved-rapportive-links-linkedin/)" target="_blank">(http://btrandolph.com/2010/11/improved-rapportive-links-linkedin/). I think that integrating the most professionally oriented social media channel more closely will help attract many more mainstream users to rapportive.

thanks for checking out my blog. yeah, the extra linkedin functionality is awesome - and to my mind bridges the gap between social media addicts and more mainstream business users.

thanks for stopping by. as I noted in the post, I think gist's dashboard product is a beautiful thing. my preference for the rapportive plugin is just personal preference - I think the gist plugin works well too, and the ui is nice. my elephant in the room postscript is based on the fact that if you are not aware of services like gist and rapportive, it doesn't matter how good the user controls are. and the people least aware of social crm are the same ones who leave their facebook controls set on the default. however, they are probably not reading my blog either! : )
