A lot of students throw research papers together at the last second; even I have been guilty of this when I care very little about the topic or the outcome of a paper. But if we really join the conversation about a certain topic and add something relevant to that discussion, we work harder because we have ownership of those ideas and they're going out to someone besides a professor (no offense) or his TAs. I like the idea of contributing to a discussion, not just writing papers in isolation, for that reason: the ideas we research become more real, more present, and more important to us.

In the same vein, the field of Instructional Technology and Psychology attempts to make the "design" of educational courses make more sense. This whole "Don't Make Me Think" (another great book on the subject) way of designing is what really sells a product and if you apply this to education, the less students have to worry about and try to understand how to maneuver your course, the more time they can spend learning what you intend for them to learn (This may just be a comment rant about Blackboard and I apologize).

This would be really cool if you followed Kevin's idea of making it a sort of collaborative social network site where people could contribute ideas to the pot, instead of you or whoever creates it having to come up with them all on their own. But very neat idea. I like the business aspect as well!

I like this idea too Ariel. It'd be neat to make a wiki of tools for writers but what if you incorporated it with Kevin's idea and made it into a place where people could collaborate and add tools they've found?

It's a good idea to focus it on students, but you could even do something like this for opportunities for crowdsourcing or internet jobs, etc.

I really like this idea Kevin. I've tried to write about digital scholarship tools on my blog so that fellow students who read it can use those tools but there is such a wealth of tools. I think a place to share and find out what others are using as "Digital Students" would be very beneficial. It's better than just one person sharing what they learn on their blog because of the collaboration aspect. What if in developing the site we put a bunch of these tools up with links to blog posts and how-to video clips or created some of these ourselves?

iStudy ... LOL

Sweet! I'm going to post about this for my readers as well. I made my own profile a while back. I wonder how many of our classmates have profiles as well. :D
