When I hear terms like "religious atheists," I think of Discovery Institute-led evangelicals who purposely dilute and distort the meanings of words to mis-educate children, rewrite history and achieve political goals generally, to which jshaftoe refers below. A few other examples off the top of my head: religious freedom, academic freedom, critical analysis, teaching controversies, civil rights, emancipation, discrimination, persecution.. I'm assuming that ChristopherTK is using the term differently however. :)

Interesting comparison of the tobacco and fossil fuels industries that I've never thought about before. Thanks.

The (albeit crasser) version that I've heard is:

Religion is like a penis.
It's okay to have one.
It's okay to be proud of yours.
Just don't go waving it around in public.
And don't try shoving it down my throat.

re: "He should reevaluate his position on his god."
Of course, the word "reevaluation" suggests a first evaluation. ;)

Permission to fine tune further? How about, "He should evaluate his position on his parents' god"?

That's such an Interesting comment. I used to subscribe to the Robert Ingersoll quote: "The truth is, most Christians are better than their creeds; most creeds are better than the Bible, and most men are better than their God," but I'm becoming more reluctant to give people the benefit of the doubt now, too.

As a former homeschooler / fly-on-the-wall witness to the growing Christian dominionist movement, I've often wondered how sacred "parental rights" would continue to be if dominionists were ever to successfully establish the Christian Nation they envision. Would secular parents be able to remove their children from (Christianized) schools in order to "train them up" in secular values and groom them as culture war footsoldiers, as dominionists are now doing? I wouldn't bet money on it.

By the way, this month I was helping my middle school daughter with her science homework.

Daughter: "That's weird. We're supposed to skip pages in our workbook. We never skip pages in our workbook."

Me: "Let me see your workbook... [flipping pages...] Oh. It's the section, Evidence for Evolution."

Once upon a time I was relieved to see that both "macro" and "micro" evolution were taught in our district -- only to be disappointed to see the science teacher drop the ball. If I hadn't been paying attention, I wouldn't have realized that my daughter was being shortchanged. Until this problem is fixed, parents who want 21st century science educations for their children need to provide them themselves.

As a "former fundogelical" myself who became an atheist by way of Christian aplogetics classes, there was a time when I endulged in my own fantasies about "allowing science teachers to teach comparative theories." :) (Obviously I went MIA from my approved reading list for a time - tsk, tsk.) I gave up the fantasy when I realized how many "Bible-believing" Christians are *in* the schools, teaching "science" - and using their classrooms as "mission fields." Some even *become* teachers to "make a difference for God."
