If my Medicare taxes and premiums had been placed in a private account and earned 6.34% per year, my Medicare premiums and the interest during the period I have been on Medicare would have paid for my Medicare benefits. When I die, my heirs would receive $139,000. Instead, they will receive nothing from Medicare. www.newsandopinions.net

"Many states and regions have renewable power mandates that force consumers to buy renewable electricity—regardless of costs." == 29 states plus D.C and Puerto Rico have adopted required percentages of electricity from renewable sources. In 2010, the average price of residential electricity in these states was 31.9% higher than it was in the other 21 states. Industrial rates were 30.7% higher and commercial rates were 27.4% higher. The 5 states with the highest rates, all with renewable requirements, were: Hawaii 28.1 cents per kilowatt-hour, Connecticut 19.25, New York 18.74, New Jersey 16.57 and New Hampshire 16.32. Idaho, without requirements, was 7.99. www.newsandopinions.net

The Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid car seems to have everything the rich and famous, and environmentally correct look for. Sleek silhouette? Check. Green credentials? Check. Six-figure price tag? Check. Reliable battery? Oops. In a test conducted by Consumer Reports magazine, the $107,850 sports car died after a short ride at 65 miles per hour on a Connecticut test track. "We have owned our car for just a few days; it has less than 200 miles on its odometer ... We buy about 80 cars a year and this is the first time in memory that we have had a car that is undriveable before it has finished our check-in process." A light on the dashboard came on, signaling battery trouble. The car wouldn’t restart after the test driver parked it. www.newsandopinions.net
