Should have turned the summoning spell into a power ballad about women empowerment, releasing your anxiety, and the complexities of political intrigue when your only export is ice blocks. On the plus side, you doubled your army of snowmen!

Subtle manipulation, designed to neutralize as much output as possible, all cast in a pretty framework of coded language. Screw it up, and your world is shattered. Am I talking about Dori's relationship with her daughter, or Mehrnaz's Wizardly style? Hm hm hm...

Now that the book is over, I can finally gush over how again and again, two major themes raised their heads in Lifeboats: "All is done for each," and to a slightly lesser extent, or perhaps a rephrasing, "Nothing's wasted." Kit could not have told that parable to that sibik without the contributions of COUNTLESS other people, both in his past, and immediately nearby: His mother who ingrained in him to feed pets before yourself, his partnership with Ponch, the Seniors who gambled on humanoids, his shift-mates, Nita, Ronan, and everyone else both on Thesba and Teveral in the Project. This was so important, even a FOURTH showed up, just to make sure.

And the WHOLE TIME, two kids angst about Valentine's Day. Ow, my feels.

My experience with holidays is somewhat tainted: My parents were just fine about celebrating holidays, as long as it was on the cheap. An example: We celebrate Chinese New Year, which always occurs chronologically months AFTER "American New Year." Somehow, my parents convinced me that CHINESE Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas occurred the weekend after the AMERICAN one, so they could hit the after-holiday sales. I didn't crack the code until I was well into my teens, but by then, it was too late; I was too much of a cheapskate to pay full price for ANYTHING.
