I personally love the simple "view" part of Rails (along with activerecord). If I were to start from scratch on a reasonably simple web app I would definitely build it in rails or django, which I've heard is pretty similar.
Also, I should mention that an Ignighter group date saved my life back in 'nam. "Charlie" would have detected our patrol, but luckily he was on a group date with some hotties.
Ingrid, I've actually had a fairly good experience on the receiving email end. I haven't experience the agony of having to send large email on a large scale yet.
I think the key to solving this will be a bulletproof "online reputation" system linked to your id (either a handle or your actual identity). If there's a simple and effective government system where people can build a reputation around an id, lodge complaints against an id and resolve disputes effectively, then those ids can be used to send email. Companies and other organizations could also build up reputations around their ids. So every email you get could have a "reputation" score of the sender. I think email providers have some simplified reputation system, but it's based on things like IP address/etc, which seems like the wrong idea.
