I justify it by saying those with the means to pay more will pay more. No one should be taxed on their first $50,000 of wages. You could clothe, house, feed, and educate yourself on that amount. Beyond that is surplus, and should be progressively taxed.

I agree, but the problem is that lack of regulation allowed the banks to merge into such big entities that if they had failed things would be much worse. The auto bailout was mostly cosmetic, but the banks really were big enough to kill the economy. If we bail em out, we get a say in how things are run.
