I think I get where you're coming from. My advice would be to try low-commitment things first. For instance, I tried full drag a few times and makeup for a while and they didn't suit me. It's like shopping for clothes (often literally.) Try on whatever looks right on the hanger, but don't feel bad if it doesn't fit or look the same on you. Obviously, some things can't be taken off or put on at will, but save those till you've gotten a better idea of where you're headed.
