Well... maybe. Sometimes these directors just have a LOT OF ANGER at themselves and the people who watch their movies. Some of these guys are intensely insecure and thus actually have contempt for the people who praise them. So they keep raising the stakes - trying to see when someone will finally fulfill their wish to call them a fraud.
(I'm not saying I think Von Trier is a fraud - I'm describing the psychology of the grandiosity complex which he appears to have)
