Jack Kramer was a wonderful and humble man who knew his place in sports history and enjoyed a great life as a true icon. He once told me (with that familiar grin) that he may have come along much too early for the big bucks (as a player) but that he will always be proud of how he helped build the sport into what it's become today! I last saw Mr. Kramer at his final public tennis related appearance watching one of his favorites, Pete Sampras in a late July Monday night exhibition match at the tournament he founded (L.A. Tennis Open) at UCLA vs. Marat Safin. I asked him about the experience as he was leaving, and he said it was always special to watch Sampras...and what a way to go out! Little did I know it would be my last interaction with Mr. Kramer, but what a pleasure it was getting to know one of the all-time great sports figures in his final years. My condolences go out to his son Bob and the entire Kramer family.
