There is only one speaker on the iPhone. The one you assume is not working is actually your microphone, according to the official iPhone User Guide

My 3GS has the old bootrom so installing iOS5 and untethered jailbreaking without baseband update was easy -- everything works fine.

Thank you, Dev-Team. Your efforts are appreciated

There is a tutorial on iclarified entitled:

iPhone | How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.3.2]

"You have to first update to a stock 4.0 to bring up your baseband to 5.13.xx because your current baseband will not work well with firmwares above 4.0.2."

I have read this elsewhere, but my iPhone 3GS is running 4.1 (8B117) which is newer than 4.0.2 quoted above and my Modem Firmware remains at 04.26.08 and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever. I am obviously concerned about how 4.3.1 will affect my iPhone when I update and JB without updating 04.26.08. I have SHSH going back to 3.1.2 so could downgrade to stock 4.0 to update 04.26.08 to 5.13.xx but will only do so as a last resort.

I have iPhone 3GS (4.1) and iPad 3G (4.2.1) -- running latest version of tinyumbrella does not save 4.3 SHSH and the log says it is too late to retrieve the SHSH on both devices. Cydia does not show 4.3 either.

Just remember not to "accidentally" update your device if you want to jailbreak and/or unlock.
