Ben...thanks for this post. Great reminder for us all, including those of us who were fortunate enough to take narrative preaching classes in seminary and never learned how to write 3 points and a poem.

Good metaphor of "putting flesh onto a skeleton," and I especially appreciate you pointing out that the Word of God is alive. So often we miss this and we say that good preaching is all about bringing the text of Scripture to life. It can't get more bogus than that!

The Word has already become flesh in the person of Jesus and my role as a preacher is to tell stories (not to bring life to a dead text) but to point to the Living Word that is actively inviting us into his Father's Story.

John,

Great post bro! It reminds me of McLuhan's premise that "technology is an extension of our humanity" not the other way around (even though we sometimes become a slave to the technologies that we use).

To play devil's advocate: if we are seeing a breakdown in the barrier between the online and offline worlds, do you think that eventually our description of reality WILL include what we have commonly referred to as the "online" world. In other words, are we seeing the breakdown of "virtual" reality because so many slide in and out of both the on and offline worlds?

I just hope we don't become the humans in Wall-E. :)

Great decision-making and thanks for the post that lets us into your life and your struggle in this area. I've personally been struggling with a "Gluttony of Information" that has resulted from my insatiable appetite for knowledge and the need to be "in the know." While I don't watch much TV, I read a book a week, blogs daily, headlines hourly, and tweets constantly. I am on information overload, which in a way, is a Gluttony of Story albeit in different forms.

I've always defined gluttony as "consuming more than you create and give away." I've become bloated on information in the same way that you've become bloated on stories. Time for us to start creating and giving away with all the reserves we have stored up in us!

I don't think you are being anti-media/tech...just being proactive in how you use media/tech so it doesn't start using you. In doing so, you are giving others permission to do the same. Way to go.

Praying for ya!
