Santorum's answer stunk, yes, but NCLB is a straw-man for states and local school districts to shift blame away from the fact that the quality of public K-12 education is diminishing throughout this nation. Standards have gotten so low that society has spawned an entirely new "mezzanine" tier of education: community college! My daughter went to a high school (the 2nd best district in a state in the so-called Top 10 states for K-12) where there was only a 2-year math requirement. And to ensure everyone could meet it, the district offered the traditional geometry curriculum as two separate year-long courses. That's the condition of our public schools: watered down curricula to ensure everyone graduates; 4-8% annual pay raises and 100% district-paid health insurance for fat, lazy, those-who-can't-do, barely knowledgeable-in-their-subject teachers; $150k salaries for do-nothing assistant superintendents; and all the attention and money oriented toward the truant poor and the illegal alien. The only solution is to end public K-12 education NOW! It's a dismal failure, just like every other social program the government has ever run!
