The Supreme Court recognizes that police departments & law enforcement officers have two responsibilities; To arrest law breakers and to gather evidence to aid in the prosecution of law breakers.

The Supreme Court has also ruled that police cannot be sued or prosecuted for failing to perform either task. We also cannot be sued or prosecuted for failing to prevent a crime, protect someone or stop a crime in process.

If you're expecting the police to keep you alive and uninjured, you're going to be sadly disappointed.
