The point about Verizon not being used to upgrading is very valid. It is a complete role reversal for them. Even to the point where they link to free third-party apps on their site. Putting the Droid on their network was astonishing to even their tech support guys I talked to. Hopefully, we'll see this transition keep going and they don't get scared and start trying to lock it down.
I'm not so sure that they are targeting geeks. I work at a high school and I couldn't believe how many girls loved the dark droid ads. When I got mine, almost everyone wanted to check it out and most really liked it. This device and the marketing for it was very popular with teens. I didn't expect that, but it was.
