I see Grady that here you are using the "Israel has a right to defend itself" defense for their mistreatment of Palestinians.

Every country in the world has the right to defend itself--including Israel. They also have the right to inspect ships going into Gaza. However, if those ships show no sign violent cargo--weapons, or parts of weapons--they should be allowed to pass.

If Israel is attacking Hamas then it should do that--it should not punish ordinary people for their governments actions.

It is a movie--and yet I don't think the ultimate purpose was to ridicule Christians.

I would say that the ultimate purpose was to show that a broader understanding of Jesus' teachings, and a broader worldview (perhaps with Christ as the anchor) is the best way to live life.

Funny you mention the girls being saved...tomorrow I'm going to write about my oldest, who wants to learn more about Buddhism.

The goal of my parenting isn't to raise Atheists. My children can grow up and choose their faith--and I will love them no matter what.

I simply want them to have the option of knowing more, thinking critically, and living what they believe.

Private schools, while full of more money and richer children, are still beset with some of the same problems as public schools. Particularly catholic schools.

But I agree with you, our public schools are a real mess, and real reform (pressure on teachers, students AND parents) is the only way to change that.

You know Grady, the beauty of an ad hominem attack is that it takes the focus off of the real conversation and switches it to something personal, something that hurts.

Yep, Thomas Jefferson was no saint. He was just like any other land-owning white male of the time.

And, he advocated a separation of church and state because he knew that our country would be better if religion was kept at bay. Nothing he did in his personal life will take away from the fact that he advocated this--he was indeed the first to submit legislation separating funds for church/religious affiliations.

I mention him and other founding fathers not for their short-comings (which were many, as are yours and mine), but for the fact that Christians seem to misunderstand their intentions due to lack of study.

Any historian will tell you Jefferson's view on religion is quite clear.

many...how many? Thomas Jefferson, while liking Jesus as a philosopher actually said that he didn't believe in any of the miracles Christ was purported to have done.

He created his own bible (The Jeffersonian Bible) for Christs sake!

Ben Franklin and George Washington followed enlightenment principles, this is well known.

I have said this before: many of the founding fathers were deists, that is they believed in a God. But, not a god that gave a damn about whether or not they prayed, used birth control methods, or cussed.

Remember that Abraham Lincoln was considered an Atheist when he ran for re-election because he refused to join a church (and only went when his wife forced him)

thanks for the update...I will correct it now.

perhaps it is better to add this quote under John Adams: Facts are stubborn things, and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."

I like this one because, well it's true. And it also speaks to his ability to deal with the truth above all things--including dogma, religious or otherwise...

it's such a sad sight. I added it simply because people believe that real sex talk will give you a mini-slut in training, and that's not true.
