I was told that the busiest day on Pearl at Foothills, Bike to work day, measured 300 bikes.

That only includes people who stopped at the breakfast station between 6-9a.m., so hundreds more passed by uncounted that day. Last year 7500 people registered for Bike to Work Day in Boulder County.

"it is too expensive to live here"

This is just flat out incorrect. I've lived car-free in Boulder for 12 years on very limited income. I first moved here to attend grad school, since graduation I've worked in the low paying non profit sector. Over that time my annual income has been around $14K per year. I've never been late on rent or other bills and always have a little extra for eating out and what not.

I can do this because I don't have pay for an automobile. In 2004 the AAA reported that the average annual cost of owning and operating an auto is $8,410 or about $700 per month. Since then the price of gas has nearly doubled bringing this cost to nearly $9k per year.

"few full time workers have jobs and family commitments that allow the time and mode for alternative transportation"

Once again this is incorrect. I tend to work 60+ hours per week and my bike commute averages around 7 minuets one way. I don't know how long it takes to commute from Longmont but I'm pretty damn sure it consumes far more time, money and convince than any in town bike commute. If I feel like going home for lunch I do because I've chosen to structure my life with a focus on localism.

If you own a car and don't think you have time for bike commuting or the bus you might want to consider how much time car ownership sucks from you. How many weeks/months out of a year do you work to pay for your car so you can get to work? How much time and money do you spend on oil changes, brake jobs, tire replacements, insurance policies, parking, tickets, traffic jams and so on?

The auto and oil industries spend over $20 billion a year on advertising so it's no surprise that most of us have been duped into believing it's a necessity. In a place like Boulder you don't need a car to live a fulfilling lifestyle.

Mainstreet, you may want to take some time and read a little more closely between the lines.

"Let`s not be fooled into thinking the damage is limited to a few dead turtles, fish and pelicans. This oil is killing the entire Gulf of Mexico. It makes me sick every time I think about it."

That's right now that we're well aware of the damage of oil extraction let's behave appropriately. Every time you fill up at the pump we are casting a vote to the oil/auto industry that says do it some more. As long as Americans keep driving there will be more and more environmental catastrophes; this is a guarantee. You can blame BP all you want but you're in denial about your complicit impact on the planet.

Wake up! Be accountable for your own actions! It's your own responsibility!
