Thanks for the input guys. We are liking the idea of having a guest curator for the next exhibition, which we think will help tighten up the images. This was a bit of a trial run.

Jake, we'll see what we can do about offering all the images in a larger format. We like the ease of having people put galleries on their blog, especially because part of this is about exposing the audience to blogs they might be interested in following, and driving traffic to those photographers. But we might be able to do something a little slicker with SoundSlides etc.

Jin Zhu - http://www.killeryellow.com - reminded us that Hamburger Eyes, which published its Issue 13 with money raised through a smart campaign and Kickstarter.com, is also a great example of innovation in funding for publishing.

Wow. Nope, didn't see that. I'm sure there are more affordable options out there. Do you know Ernesto Bazan's Cuba? I know he looked at several printers before settling on one in Italy. He might be worth checking in with. It was a learning experience for him, so he's happy to share information :)

Found Benrido - http://www.benrido.co.jp/new/ueda_calendar_e.html - from reading eyecurious' post. Might check with him about printers in Japan to contact. http://www.eyecurious.com/some-more-fuel-on-the-p...

On the aesthetic innovation front, I also wanted to call attention to Ed Kashi's new book, THREE. You can see a page-though video with audio interview here: http://blog.livebooks.com/2009/10/ed-kashi-a-new-...

Ed went back through decades of "documentary" images and created a beautiful art book that removed his images from their original context and helped his see his own work in a totally new way.

If individual artists can still find new approaches to their own work within the confines of the "traditional" printed photobook, reminds me that technology often spurs innovation, but it's not the only source by any means.

Sorry about that Marc. Got it right the first time at least :) And I fixed the comment so it refers to Mrs. Deane. I've been talking to Daylight too about contributing...too many browser tabs open!

Here's a good interview with Alan Rapp about self-publishing that we just included in the main post.

And details about digital offset printing from Mrs. Deane here.

You're right, Nick. I meant printers. The fact that I conflated the two probably suggests how much new knowledge it requires to even undertake a self-publishing project. I've changed the headline to "printers" to be more precise.

Hi everyone who has commented so far! I've created a new post where we can collect suggestions for great publishing houses to work with if you want to self-publish a photobook.

Please add your thoughts if you have any :)

Great idea. I'm going to create a separate post for that question and link it into this main post :)
