That's the beauty of this bed. You don't have to empty the shelves just to get the bed down.

The bookshelf is on a pivot, and you can rotate it so that the shelves face the wall. The pull-down bed is attached to the back of the bookshelf, so that the bookshelf stays upright when you pull the bed down.
