No liberal thought that, since we all knew the Supreme court is currently a 4-4-1 split, with Kennedy being the primary swing voter. Why would we think that Roberts, Alito, etc. were on "our" side? Be liberal, be conservative, but don't be ridiculous.
I hate to say it, but anyone who doesn't recognize that people can't make independent decisions simply knows nothing about psychology. If people could make logical, independent decisions, there would be no reason to make advertisements (i mean normal advertisements here, not political ones) that persuade you to buy beer by showing sexy women, or medicine by scaring you about diseases you don't have. As we interpret the Constitution, we have to remember that they simply had no idea of what modern life would be like--in this case, the ability to create and transmit messages that are available in real time to everyone everywhere. Finally, don't forget that the Founding Fathers didn't even trust the citizenry to vote directly in Presidential or Senatorial elections. So even if you argue that circumstances now should allow equal protection to corporations and interest groups, you certainly can't argue that the Founding Fathers had any intention for this type of election process.
