Because of 'iPhone Apps' and 'Android market' !(there are other factors but apps are the most critical Add-ons to these smartphones).
And in long term,as Open source has always beaten proprietary technologies such as GSM(over CDMA),PHP(over .NET and others),i bet Android will surpass both Symbian and iPhone OS.When contribution in innovation is not one-sided,things accelerate like anything.

Symbian has been improvising itself for years now but still it can't match iPhone OS or Android by most of the standards,be it the ease of navigation, web browsing experience or the extravagent UI.
Just like Windows(which has been for decades now) is unmatchable with Mac in similar sense.
And just because,Symbian has been there for quite a while,it's also the most popular one (at the moment)...
But with latest initiatives from entities like Sony ericcson and others,Android looks to me the most promising one....Wait for 3-4 years and the current picture in Mobile OS market will be dramatically different !

How did u you know that i've no prior knowledge of basic OOP concepts like inheritance, polymorphism, loops etc when it's not at all a 'rocket science'(quite easy) to learn...I envy your smartness(lolz)
Talking serious, you are quite right in saying that i don't have years of coding experience.....and i think,i don't even need to have it coz i'm not a coder(my source of bread & butter is different)
Just like you don't need(can't guarantee but i just hope so) to be a 'telecom expert' to realize that WiMAX will replace Wi-Fi quite soon,i don't need to be a 'hardcore coder' to realise the advantages that CF offers over PHP and other prog. languanges
But ending this stuff,i would say it again that PHP is winner of the two at the moment.
