Patent assignment dictates patent ownership, which are assigned by the inventors. This is because a company cannot be listed as an Inventor of any patent, so one of their employees must be listed (who then forfeit their ownership by assigning assignees).

Raines and the other inventors do not own this patent. The assignees, Fannie Mae and CO2e.com, own this patent. While Raines will no doubt be making big money for the rest of his life, it will not be from receiving royalties over this or any other patent that he is listed as an inventor of. Also this patent is a green initiative to finance reductions in energy and carbon emissions of residential homes.
