The post is not meant to teach \"Delhiites\" how they should be, but is a set of observations of the things that are wrong here. That Vishal is a person from outside Delhi, is a judgemental point of view, since this post has generated interest among those people as well who are originally from Delhi, like you. So, there is reason to believe you have approached the article from a very sentimental angle, and that might not have been the best way to tackle it. That said, I do indeed respect your reading and interpretation, which is why I am commenting myself to respond to the points raised by you.
You mention that the writer needs to *appreciate the greatness of Delhi*; well ‘appreciating the greatness’ and ‘pointing out scope of improvement’ are two different things and both can be done simultaneously. Moreover this seems to be the general attitude in India, ‘Tell tales about the glorious past and culture of India, dream about the splendid future that will be BUT compromise with the not-so-good present and neither utter a word about it nor do anything to improve’. This status quo has to change.
Now coming to the points raised by you:
1) The post is not about \"Delhiite the person\", but \"Delhi the city\". The offenders in rape cases are mostly from outside Delhi *as you say*, but we are talking about a city that is the capital of India, which represents the whole country. If Delhi is unsafe for women, there have to be reasons within Delhi and *solutions* within Delhi, not the excuse that offenders are non-Delhiites. In this context now, the phrase \"Thank you so much Delhi men\" used by the author, never says that the person who is at fault is the Delhi man who was born in Delhi or who has migrated from elsewhere. I repeat, we are talking about Delhi the city, and the circumstances WITHIN that city.
2) Suresh Kalmadi is from Pune, but again, the site of his scam was Delhi. When we talk about a country, all its parts have similar ratios of clean people and corrupt people. So, if Kalmadi is corrupt, so are many Delhiites, and if some Mumbaikar is clean, so are many Delhiites. Will you, on merely a sentimental basis, deny that Delhiites can not be corrupt? The point is, a city is made by people, and every person is a human on his own, with their own values. Any human society is properly proportioned with the good and the bad. We are not talking about corrupt people here, but corruption. Again, the article is not talking about Delhiites the people being good or bad, but about Delhi the city and the circumstances within that city. (\"It seems that from anything to everything, apparently nothing good is happening around Delhi. And I feel Delhiites are so (un)lucky to be here.\")
3) Terminal 3, Delhi Metro, Vinod Dham and great astrologers are not the point. No one is denying their achievements. But this article is not about individual achievements, rather the collective faults/failures that affect a larger crowd and has some scope of improvement.
4) I apologise for the usage of the word \"shit\" for something which holds a close-to-heritage significance in the city. But the statement \"Going by the odour of the paranthas...\" means that this is the author\'s personal opinion. If the current dirty unhealthy roadside eating habits at fast-food-thelas ever intrude into Chandni Chowk as well, we will NOT stay back from being critical about it, even if it is part of the city\'s heritage and has a sentimental value. A city can\'t risk its health in the wind of sentiments. The error here is in calling the Paranthe of Nehru\'s times also as \"shit\", which might be careless judgement without having any knowledge of the quality of those times. Apologies.
Plus you say that every culture has some traditions that they hold dear. The writer is not questioning ‘Delhiites eating paranthas but the quality of the paranthas and the ambience. If there is a scope for improvement in both, why not?
The Metallica concert was held in Gurgaon, but the people who are being commented about (the ones who threw bottles) were not all from Gurgaon. Delhi is the closest metro city, and it is I believe, natural to assume people from Delhi formed the majority. Again, it is to be noted that behavior of people could not have changed merely by crossing the Delhi-Haryana border. If anything could have changed merely by crossing that political border, it would have been the setup and organising of the event, (since in that case Haryana authorities would come into the picture), BUT that is never the thing being criticized. The comment was upon the people throwing bottles.
Lastly, the article is an opinion and flow of thoughts—a set of observations made for the sake of expressing disappointment rather than for the sake of expressing ridicule or criticism. This is not satire, and is sarcasm and commentary at most.
Further, the award received by this website was a testimony of the work by NTMN over two years, and I don\'t think the judges gave us the award by judging just a single article as being good or bad. We are students and in the process of perfecting our art. So, thank you for reading the article and posting the elaborate comment. We will take it as a constructive criticism and improve wherever the scope be. As the editor who passed and published this article, I considered it necessary to reply to points raised by you. I await your response.
