As someone who grew up in the Unionist community I am ashamed and embarrassed that this so called man of God successfully isolated us from the rest of the world, making us virtual pariahs, with his self serving sectarian outpourings.

He rabble roused the Loyalist psychopaths, then backed away when they slaughtered indiscriminately.

He and his ilk brought down Sunningdale, the one chance in a generation to end our Dirty little war with dignity and save 2000 lives.

He cried 'traitor' and 'no surrender' at Trimble, who did all the hard yards for Unionism pre-GFH, all the while knowing it was the only show in town...Then he jumped straight into bed with the Shinners as one half of the chuckle brothers.

Paisley hasn't had some Road to Damascus style conversion, he realizes that history will see him for what he is, a hate filled religious zealot, with a barely concealed sectarian blood lust and he is now desperately trying to fashion some measure of false legacy. The sad thing is alot of those same people he hoodwinked for so many years are falling for it.

The man did more damage to Unionism than the IRA ever did, it is no coincidence that he was never the target for assassination given he was the most effective recruiter to their ranks in the history of the Troubles.

Could not agree more. The only way for either the DUP or more likely the UUP to transcend and evolve into a modern fully democratic party is to break the chains of the religious zealots that bind them inextricably to the past. Not only do the OO not represent the views of the majority of those of a Unionist persuasion, they seek to restrict individual lifestyle choices by applying their own set of archaic 'morals.'

But Gerry didn't do any fighting...he was never in the IRA. Sure he couldn't even stand up to fight for his niece against the oppressor in her own household.

Until we have a society where the electorate vote based on whether they are liberal, socialist or conservative as opposed to being pawns in a sectarian headcount...

Until we have a society where those who perceive themselves to be marginalized can protest peacefully without laying siege to the streets of our capital...

Until we have a society where mass murderers are seen by all as exactly that and not freedom fighters or heros...

Until we have a society where 50% don't feel so disenfranchised that they don't vote...

Until we have a society where all sides are honest enough to realize, admit to and truly repent the mistakes they have made and continue to make...

Until we have a society where religious zealots no longer dictate to and seek to restrict individual freedoms and life choices...

WE WILL NEVER HAVE REAL COMPROMISE, nor we will we ever transcend and evolve into a modern democratic society...
