Unlike so many journalists, when I write articles I try to show some humility by, when appropriate, refraining from absolutely asserting things. There is a good reason for this. This passage from a different article of mine (albeit about a completely different topic) sums up my feelings on the matter:
"When reporters claiming to be neutral political fact-checkers go beyond mere reporting to state with absolute certainty things they cannot possibly know, they run the risk of churning out political opinion masquerading as high-minded investigative journalism."
So you can see why I sometimes insert qualifiers. Although I'm pretty confident in this article sometimes we get it wrong. Facts change, new things happen, and so on. Qualifiers let the reader judge for himself or herself what the facts really are.
