Sorry, I'm a little late on that post (I'm actually reading the entire site, catching up because I like what you do...), but you can definitely play DOTT on any computer thanks to the ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/). You just have to install an application and point to the folder containing the game and it just works :)
Anyway, DOTT really is one of the best game ever...

I think I'm going to buy this compilation. It's not the first time I heard of it, and I didn't own a Genesis at that time (just a GameBoy).
Anyway, while I read your article, I couldn't help but think of the girl in Fable II, the daughter of that priest, with whom you take some quests. Same kind of girl, out there for revenge. But not having played Phantasy Star, it's hard to do a thorough comparison :)
