"Some doctors think soda taxes would disproportionately hurt the poor and disadvantaged."

I disagree with these doctors. Poor people do not have to purchase soda to survive. All the human body needs to function is water and our water here is usually clean enough from the faucet, or they can purchase a Britta filter for cheaper than a months supply of soda.

I don't understand why everyone thinks schools are just for math and English. Why can't the parents teach the kids addition on their own? Because they don't have the time? Well, maybe they don't have the time to teach proper nutrition and proper emotional responses because they have to work two jobs or they are just trying to relax in the evening on occasion because work is stressful...there could be many reasons. Why not let the schools attempt to teach these things to kids who aren't getting it at home? They can learn it at school, then come home and ask questions about it. What is wrong with creating an environment where kids can be curious about these kinds of things the same way they are curious about science?

I think this is really a great thing! Our biggest weapon against the spread of AIDS is knowledge. It's really a scary thing though and I am thinking the most likely candidates may be too afraid to get tested and just ignore the risk.
However, I will remain hopeful.

"In response to the ruling, immigrant rights supporters said they're concerned that the part that was upheld will allow police to stop and question people simply because of the color of their skin."

It's right here in the text of the article. It will allow racial profiling. This is the same thing black people have been fighting their whole life. People comment on criminals who happen to be Mexican all the time on this site saying that they must be illegal just because they are Mexican. Not seeing how something like this can be construed as racists mean you are part of the problem!

Personally, I think what we need is to restructure our education to include emotional education as well as academic. We are too focused on test scores. Kids drop out because they can't handle the work. We should teach them something useful, like anger management. I love math myself, but Algebra isn't going to help most people with the difficulties of life.

What, none of you have a better solution?
We need taxes to keep the parks clean. I know I am in the minority, but a sales tax would help. Make the parks free and bring people to the city to shop. We can't just keep complaining about taxes without another solution.
I don't think increasing prices for use of parks is the right solution at all! Why discourage people from organizing public events? Stupid.

YES!!! I am also a martial artist with 18+ years of training, and I always wonder what I would do if I were attacked. We are taught to ignore confrontations and not to provoke fights, so it's scary to think about how you might handle yourself in a real fight. Most of us don't have a lot of experience in real life situations. We hope it will never happen. But Ms. Dang was assaulted when someone grabbed her. I think it's so great and brave that she stood up for herself. Who knows, these kids could have had gone further with their assault and she could have saved herself from something worse. And she used her training instinct to back off from the knife. No ego here, just self defense.
