That beautiful animal was widespread across the entire northern half of the country, including the lower peninsula of Michigan prior to the whiteman coming over and settling and killing every animal in its sight that posed a profit (fur pelts) or a threat - same fate as the cougar, lynx, bobcat, bear, timber wolves and coyotes. Wolverines are/were exceptionally sensitive to human encroachment. They will/do abandon their dens when they smell the stink of human population anywhere near them. And when we over-trapped and over-hunted their main food sources, such as the snowshoe hare, along with every other small game animal we could trap and shoot into extinction, they died out and / or migrated higher into Canada.__Not a new story... same fate as every other extinct animal since we homo-sapiens moved to the top of the food chain.
