Actually, Bella is the one who is against marriage. Until the very last book she tries to convince Edward it is an unnecessary step. He is the one that pushes for the 'old-school' notion of marriage while Bella finds it pointless. In the end she agrees to marriage only as part of deal that will ensure she is turned a vampire and that they can live as husband and wife before that happens. She doesn't want to miss out on the physical side.
As a result, many of the current young adult titles take that same theme of a young woman's incompleteness without a man in her life.

Excellent point. I had similar thoughts while I read the books. This reality as described in the book is not something too far from reality. This could be a very real scenario in the future. And we would need those who are willing to stand up against the tyrannical government, putting their lives on the line to right a wrong.

In my opinion this is a book that nearly every teenager and young adult has already read. Instead of decrying its faults I think it can be read and used to discuss the important moral and ethical dilemmas the character face and their response. The choices are not always correct, but the book makes an impact and we can utilize that for the good if healthy discuss comes as a result of it.

Clare, I agree there are certainly some plot lines that need to be discussed. This is certainly no light-heartened beach read.
But I also think a lot of the 'maybes' you are talking about show the beauty of fiction. Collins wrote it so that Katniss never had that moral decision of taking Rue's life or not.
The 'suicide threat' was never really that and most people I've talked to about it didn't even see it as possible that she would kill herself in that way. She knew how the capitol reacted and was never in danger of following through. It was her playing into the game, moving her chess piece into checkmate, if you will. I didn't see it as a way or promoting suicide.
The mercy killing at the end, was certainly wrong. No question about that. But doesn't all good literature pull at us and make us question things that are bigger than just us? Utilized right this book can be an amazing teach tool about ethics and morality.

A few years ago I went on a painting bender and did a number of rooms in my house and in others. But I never knew of these products. Next time I'm going to look for these. They look like they would make the job a lot easier and a lot quicker too. - Katy

Felicia, I posted this for Damien, but just in case you missed my response... here are two more items for you to consider on the topic: A commentary by Fr. Baron about the Hunger Games: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsFBbS39_z0 and Unlocking the Mockingjay; the spiritual allegory: http://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/unlocking-mockin...

Damien, Thanks for posting this link.
Might I suggest two other reading items?? A commentary by Fr. Baron about the Hunger Games: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsFBbS39_z0 and Unlocking the Mockingjay; the spiritual allegory: http://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/unlocking-mockingjay-the-spiritual-allegory/
Both of these pieces have interesting things to say about the book and the value that can be pulled from it.

Colleen, you've got me thinking I need to re-read the last book for further clarification to see if that is truly the case. I was so distraught when she voted for the games again.

Ian, I completely agree. Hermione is a great female character! I like the Katniss character especially since she is the main role in the series! At the moment I cannot think of another young adult book that features such a strong female main character.

This is something we women could use to remember. "People who don't take the initiative to offer up their seat to a woman are often quite happy to do so if asked." Thanks for the reminder.
