I enjoy his blog, mostly. Blue Like Jazz sure was a great collection of ideas though. It put into words so many things that were already on my mind as a Christian. He's a wonderful communicator, though I can understand your wife's concern with him. He's a dangerous thinker. ;)

I definitely agree religion is a very misunderstood word. People think religion and they think about forced, robotic rituals. I hate that, because religion in it's language roots is a word that means "to bring together," like healing torn ligaments. The irony is religion does the exact opposite of that here in current history.

But I've got to say- I definitely don't think postmodern American Christianity has anything to do with the negative effects you see in the church. The practices of liturgy and denominational specific processes are completely borne out of the modern era of thought. Postmodernism, from what I've gathered, is strictly pushing away from that old model and trying to construct a new one right now (like the one of relationships rather than religion like you mentioned). If anything postmodern thought and influence is waking up the Christians who have been stuck in ritual and religion.

So, all that to say, I kind of agree with Devon. I don't really understand what you're saying either. Care to expound what you're thinking?

Not yet. Is it really that good? I know tons of small groups who have read it, but I don't know, I just haven't gotten into it when I've tried to.

and

A New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren

Both are rocking my brain.
